Creating a brighter future at Classen through new and fun majors

Dreams Unleashed

Classen is an amazing school. We have so many different variations of what a comet is. From dance majors to choir, and IB. All of these VPA and IB aspects of the school make Classen the art school it is today. But, what if we had more, Even more options? Classes! And Majors! Let’s take a look at what Classen could look like with even more variations of what a comet is.

I think that Classen should add new options like new majors and improved current majors. The first major I would add is Media Photography and Film. I feel like there are a lot of students at our school who are interested in writing, photography, videography, and broadcasting news. At our school, we already have Journalism as a class but I would love it if this was an entire major. The major would be called Media: Film and Photography or MFP. It would cover in middle school the fundamentals of Media such as journalism and broadcasting as well as news. The major would also cover the fundamentals of photography and film with beginner classes.

The second major I would add is focused IB majors. As you may know, Classen SAS is working towards being an IB middle school in the near future. Along with the Media: Film and Photography major I think that when we officially become an IB middle school Classen should also add focused IB majors. Right now there are a lot of students who are currently expressing their passions through the visual and performing art majors already available however I think there should be a chance to express your passion through IB-centered majors as well. The focused IB major would be a program available to all current and soon-to-be IB majors where they could center their studying along specific IB topics. The available focuses would be science, technology & business, general history, math, and general IB. For example, if a student was a general history IB major they might be required to take classes like humanities in middle school and ancient civilizations or government in high school. This would allow students to maybe even jump ahead in certain core classes during middle school to learn at a higher level in high school receiving high school and college credits.

Adding these majors would add a lot of needed options for some comets at our school. It would open new doors to new interests and passions. The two new aspects would allow students to explore what they want to pursue in the future. By introducing these new programs we can cater to a wider range of interests within the student body. Additions should not only enrich our school but also empower students. With a broader spectrum of options, Classen could truly become a hub for creativity, knowledge, and innovation.
