Poet, Leslie Sosa (8th)

08/25/23

Leslie sosa is an 8th grade strings major at Classen. She can often be seen working on learning a new piece of music, writing , or poetry. In her poems you can really feel her opinions and you can tell that she's headstrong.

Below you can see her most recent piece and the inspiration behind it:

When asked what inspired her to write this amazingly written poem she responded,

"I wrote this poem for those who feel as if they don't have control over their own lives. I want to let people know that they are free to be themselves"

"Freedom" Leslie Sosa

Who said you had limits?

Who said you had to be a specific person?

Who said you couldn’t run freely?

Who said your wings had to be tied?

Who said you had to be locked in a cage?

They are liars!

They don’t get to control you

They don’t get to define you

Who are they to tell you who to be?

Or what to do?

You are the only person who chooses your decisions

They don’t get to lock you in a cage

And hide the key

They don’t have the right to tie your wings

You get to be free

You get to soar

Running with limits

Is not running freely

Running without limits

Is running freely

If they tell you what path to take

Is that even called freedom anymore?

If they tell you which direction to go

Is life an adventure anymore?

Who am I to tell you not to be different?

I am no one to tell you that

Who told you that you couldn’t be yourself?

They are foolish

Nobody gets to tell you who to be

Or what to do

That is why you have a mind

You get to make your own decisions!

That is why you were created

To write another story

That adds on to the billions of people around you

Your story is unique

And special

Just like how my story is unique and special

Freedom is the definition of not being enslaved or imprisoned

Freedom means to speak, act, and think how one wants to

Not how someone tells you to

The statute of liberty

Is a symbol of freedom and hope

Who is capable of controlling your body and mind?

If not you

My sister

Who told you to walk in a cage

And be locked up?

Who put chains on your hands

And wouldn’t let you go?

They have no right to do that

Some people might say hate is the cause

But hate is just jealousy

Hate is the word that describes wanting to take something

That isn’t yours

Your body

Your mind

Your heart and soul

Are not theirs

It is yours

It belongs to you

It was made for you

And it was put in you

You own it

They don’t

No one gets to determine your purpose

They don’t get to choose your future

You choose it

That is why you have a mouth to speak

One must not stay silent

One must speak

You have two hands

And two legs

That were given to you

Your two hands are made

To be able to do whatever you please

Your two feet are made

To wander around the earth

Everything that you have

Everything that has happened to you

Was planned with a purpose

Just because something bad happened

That does not define you

It does not mean

That nothing good will happen to you

I believe in you

Keep going

Because you will get there.
